The Story

Jenifer “Mariam” Adero Atego was born in the year 1950 in

Goma -Village in Yimbo. the 5th born in a family of 5 children,

4 girls and 1 boy.

Mariam as she was fondly known in her youth schooled at

Jusa Primary in 1957 and later admitted to Ng’iya girls

having passed her exams before being transferred to

Maseno.

She served briefly as a teacher at Majimbo Got Agulu

sub-location which was her introduction into formal

employment.

She later trained in office practice and secretarial duties and got employment with East Africa Industries for a shot spell before joining Firestone (East Africa) ltd now Yana Tyres as a secretary at the Kisumu Depot, a position she served faithfully for 23 years until 1995 when she decided to take an early retirement with a passionate desire to go build a rural home for her children.

Upon retirement, Mariam ventured into farming activities having acquired a beach plot at the shores of L.Victoria, coming into a community that had an interest in fish farming than crop farming activities.

In pursuit of her desires , Mariam spent almost her entire retirement benefits on farm equipment which have since outlived her.

Besides the aforesaid activities, she also ventured into poultry and dairy farming which earned her a nick nameNya-goma maka dher dume”among the locals.

As a teacher and an active farmer Mariam lived her dream and introduced crop farming to the community which only knew of fish farming. Today many locals continue to cultivate their land for domestic and commercial use.

Today, Jenifer’s Youngest daughter  Christine Atego is continuing in the footstep of her beloved Mother, She heads Sunken  Ltd as the Managing Director of the Company and steering the organization in the same way Mariam would. She has stayed true to the principles of the founder i.e to always improve the lives of those around her.
